Tom:
Sure. One nice phrase from today’s story is in ‘tandem’, which comes up sometimes in news stories and press releases. When two things do something in tandem, they’re side by side in a line or working as a team to move in the same direction. Have you ever heard of a tandem bicycle?

Naomi:

トムさん、アメリカの読書感想文、どんな感じですか？
Tom:
Well… I wrote book reports like the ones in today’s story when I was a kid. But apparently book reports in the U.S are evolving. Some teachers assign something called ’Cereal box book report’
(私は子供の頃、今日の話のような読書感想文を書いた。しかし、どうやらアメリカの読書感想文は進化しているようだ。シリアルボックス読書感想文」なんていうのを課す先生もいる。)
Noomi:
What is that?
Tom:
Well, each student decorates a cereal box based on a book they’ve read. So their own cover for the book goes on the front of the box, profiles of characters and the plot on the sides and a book based game like a maze on the back. It’s kind of like a multimedia project.
(生徒たちはそれぞれ、読んだ本をもとにシリアルの箱をデコレーションする。箱の表には自分たちの本の表紙、側面には登場人物のプロフィールと筋書き、裏面には迷路のような本を題材にしたゲームが描かれる。マルチメディア・プロジェクトのようなものだ。)
Naomi:
面白いですね。朝食用シリアルの箱を使った読書感想文。表が本の表紙で、両サイドにあらすじと登場人物の紹介。そして裏には本に基づいた迷路など、ゲーム要素など、図工要素もあって、クリエイティブですね。
