US designates Houthis as terrorists

The US State Department has once again put the Iran-backed Houthi rebel group on its list of “specially designated global terrorist” groups. The announcement was made on Wednesday, but the designation will not take effect until February 16.
The designation bars people and companies in the US from providing the rebels with any support. It also requires American financial institutions to freeze their funds.
State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said attacks by the Houthis against international shipping have “endangered mariners” and disrupted the free flow of commerce and freedom of navigation. He added that for the past several weeks, the US and its allies have “made clear that there must be consequences for those attacks.”
Since November, the Houthis have launched dozens of attacks on commercial vessels in and around the Red Sea. Over the past week, US forces have been conducting strikes on Houthi positions to “degrade” their ability to carry out further attacks.
Houthi leaders say their strikes have been a show of solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, and they vowed to continue until Israel stops its offensive. They also accuse the Americans of using the terrorist designation as “blackmail.”
The administration of former US President Donald Trump added the Houthis to two terrorists lists. The Biden administration revoked the designations to respond to a humanitarian crisis in Yemen, where the Houthis are based.
