秋のアメリカ大統領選挙に向けた野党・共和党の候補者選びの初戦、中西部アイオワ州の党員集会で、ドナルド・トランプ前大統領が他の候補者に大差をつけて勝利しました。(Former President Donald Trump won by a wide margin over the other candidates at the caucus in the midwestern state of Iowa, the first round of candidates for the opposition Republican Party in the fall US presidential election.)

caucus「党員集会」
党員集会は、党員が学校や公共施設などに集まり、各陣営の代表者による演説や討論を聞いたうえで投票を行い、党の指名を受けるべき候補者を選出するものです。

vote「投票」という意味「票」という意味もあり、

また、「主要な、第１の」という意味もあり、primary duty「主要な職務」

前のセンテンスで使った nationwide に代えて、ここではacross the country「国中で、全国で」

アメリカ大統領選挙は、１１月の投票に向けて民主・共和両党が全米の各州などでcaucus「党員集会」やprimary (election)「予備選挙」を行って党の大統領候補を決める仕組みとなっています。党の候補者を党員集会で決めるか予備選挙で決めるかは、州によって異なります。同じ州の中でも片方の党が党員集会で決め、もう片方の党は予備選で決めるという場合もありますし、予備選での投票資格も選挙方式も州によって異なります。
