U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping have spoken face-to-face for the first time in a year. It happened on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum on Wednesday. They say they’ve made progress on bilateral ties. That includes resuming high-level dialogue between their countries’ militaries and the leaders themselves.

“To keep the lines of communication open, including between President Xi and me, he and I agreed that either one of us could pick up the phone, call directly, and we’d be heard immediately.”
Biden also said he stressed the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. He added that the U.S. remains committed to the One China policy.
Before the meeting, Xi said it was in both countries’ best interests to improve their relationship.

A hat believed to have belonged to Napoleon Bonaparte was auctioned for a record 1.9 million euros, or more than 2.1 million dollars.
Bidding for the former French emperor’s memorabilia took place at an auction house in Paris on Sunday. Media outlets reported that the hat was made of black beaver felt in the traditional bicorne shape associated with Napoleon. The auction house said the price topped the 1.88 million euros paid for another Napoleon hat in 2014.
The latest hat features a badge that Napoleon himself is said to have attached in 1815 when he returned from exile on the island of Elba. Napoleon is said to have owned about 120 similar hats. Twenty are thought to remain today.

Organizers of the 2025 World Expo in Osaka, western Japan, are meeting with international participants this week. They’re outlining the state of preparations, with a number of countries behind schedule in building their pavilions.
Around 150 countries and eight international organizations are planning to participate in the expo. The representatives are meeting in Osaka on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Preparations for the world expo are behind schedule amid a surge in the price of construction materials. The Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition hopes to accelerate construction by explaining Japan’s support measures.
It plans to offer information to countries that have not yet been able to sign a contract with a construction company, as well as information on firms that handle interior decoration and exhibits.

Major League Baseball sensation Ohtani Shohei has won this year’s Most Valuable Player Award in the American League. He’s now the first player in MLB history to claim the title twice by unanimous vote.
MVP winners are chosen in each league through voting by the 30 members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. MLB made the announcement Thursday.
In his sixth MLB season, the Japanese two-way star hit 44 home runs and became the first Asian player to clinch the American League’s home run title. He also earned 10 wins as a pitcher. He became the first player in MLB history to hit double-digit home runs as a batter and record 10 or more wins as a pitcher in back-to-back seasons.
Ohtani missed games for nearly a month toward the end of the season due to an injury in his right elbow and a strained right oblique muscle. But his overwhelming performances in both pitching and hitting assured he would make MLB history.

The issue of privacy is in the spotlight at Shinto shrines in Japan, where visitors write wishes and prayers on small wooden tablets called ema. Recently, some people have started covering their ema with stickers to hide their names and messages.
Some of the roughly 300 ema tablets at Nishinomiya Shrine in Hyogo Prefecture are covered with stickers. The shrine doesn’t sell stickers, so the people who wrote on the tablets must have brought them.
Another shrine is preserving privacy in a different way. It’s using small pouches instead of stickers. The shrine started offering the pouches four years ago. In the age of social media, people are increasingly worried that their secret wishes will be leaked.
