“The Bear and Two Travelers” is a classic Aesop’s fable that teaches a moral lesson about the importance of practicality and quick thinking.

Once upon a time, two friends were traveling through a forest. Along the way, they encountered a ferocious bear. One of the travelers, seeing the bear, immediately climbed up a nearby tree, thinking it would be the safest place to escape the bear’s attack. However, the other traveler, who was not as swift or agile, froze in fear, unable to decide what to do.

As the bear approached, the frozen traveler fell to the ground and lay still, pretending to be dead. The bear, curious, sniffed around the motionless traveler but soon lost interest, thinking the person was already dead. After a while, the bear left, and the traveler who had climbed the tree descended safely.

Once they were out of danger, the traveler who had climbed the tree asked his friend what the bear had whispered to him when it approached. The other traveler replied, “The bear advised me not to trust a false friend.”

The moral of the story is that in times of danger, it’s essential to stay calm and think quickly. Sometimes, using your wit and ingenuity can save you, even when faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges. Additionally, it reminds us to be cautious of those who might not have our best interests at heart, even if they appear friendly.

昔々、二人の友人が森を旅していた。その途中、獰猛な熊に出会った。熊を見た旅人の一人は、熊の攻撃から逃れるにはそこが一番安全だと考え、すぐに近くの木に登った。しかし、もう一人の旅人は素早くも俊敏でもなく、恐怖で固まってしまった。

クマが近づいてくると、凍えていた旅人は地面に倒れ、死んだふりをしてじっとしていた。好奇心旺盛な熊は、動かない旅行者の周りを嗅ぎ回ったが、その人はすでに死んでいるのだと思い、すぐに興味を失った。しばらくして熊は立ち去り、木に登っていた旅人は無事に下山した。

危機を脱した後、木に登っていた旅人は友人に、熊が近づいてきたとき何をささやいたのかと尋ねた。もう一人の旅人は、「熊は私に、偽りの友人を信じるなと忠告した」と答えた。

この話の教訓は、危険な時には冷静さと迅速な思考が不可欠だということだ。一見乗り越えられない困難に直面しても、機知と創意工夫を働かせれば救われることがある。さらに、たとえ友好的に見えても、私たちの最善の利益を考えていない可能性のある相手には用心することを思い出させてくれる。
