California controller raises tax issue with Ohtani’s LA Dodgers contract

A California state official said Japanese baseball star Ohtani Shohei’s contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers could give him an unfair tax break.
State Controller Malia Cohen said in a statement Monday that Ohtani could potentially escape payment of state income taxes on the deferred amount, should he return to Japan.
Ohtani signed a record-breaking 10-year, 700-million dollar deal with the Major League Baseball team in December. Payment of 680 million dollars is deferred until after the contract expires.
Cohen said “The current tax system allows for unlimited deferrals for those fortunate enough to be in the highest tax brackets, creating a significant imbalance in the tax structure.”
The controller said “The absence of reasonable caps on deferral for the wealthiest individuals exacerbates income inequality and hinders the fair distribution of taxes.”
Cohen called for legislative action to act to make taxes more fair. She said, “I would urge Congress to take immediate and decisive action to rectify this imbalance.”
The California Center for Jobs and the Economy estimates that income tax revenue the state could lose annually if Ohtani moved out of the state in 2033 is equivalent to the total tax liability of the bottom 1.78 million tax filers in 2021.
