「新幹線」 を英語で伝えるには?
ステップ1は It’s Japan’s cross-country train. (日本の長距離列車です)と伝えること。 厳密には日本全土を横断(あるいは縦断) するわけではありませんが、 cross-country は 「横断」 「縦断」 といった意味に限りませんし、正確な訳語を探すよりも相手がイメージできるものに寄せて表現したほうがピンときやすいはず。
そして、 ステップ2で It’s called the “bullet train” because it’s so fast. と補足できます。 厳密さはひとまず置いておいて、 意思疎通を優先しましょう!(Let’s put aside rigor for the moment and focus on communication!)

乗り放題の「レールパス (rail pass)」
特定の期間やエリアで電車が乗り放題になるレールパスは、学生の格安旅行の強い味方。
(The Rail Pass, which allows unlimited train rides for a specific period of time and area, is a strong ally of cheap student travel.)
僕は20歳のとき、 レールパスを使ってどれだけ多くの国に行けるか試したことがあります。 ちょうどパスポートに訪問した国のスタンプを集めるのと同じように、 レールパスでヨーロッパの国々の 「スタンプラリー」 をしていました。
日本にも似たような乗車券があるので、 訪日外国人観光客に使い方を聞かれることがあるかもしれません。

使えるか分からなければ 「駅員に聞いてみます」 と言って手伝ってあげてください。 「駅員」 を英語で何と言うか悩まなくても、 I’ll ask. (聞いてみます) だけで大丈夫です。
