Hometown tax plan utilized to collect donations for quake-hit region

A rising number of Japanese people are using a tax-reduction plan to make donations to quake-hit communities in the central part of the country. The plan, called “Furusato Nozei,” lets them donate money to municipalities of their choice in exchange for a tax cut and gifts.
Websites mediating between local governments and donors have set up special pages calling for support for the severely affected localities in and around Ishikawa Prefecture.
Four major portal sites say the donations received by early Tuesday afternoon have totaled over 2.1 billion yen, or over 14 million dollars.
One of the websites, Furusato Choice, says it has received about 5.7 million dollars.
The other major websites, Satofuru and Rakuten Furusato Nozei, have each pulled in around 4 million dollars. Furunavi has pulled in about 900,000 dollars.
Donors also have the choice of turning down gifts from the municipalities they have selected.

ウェブサイトの一つ「ふるさとチョイス」によると、約５７０万ドルの寄付があったという。
他の大手サイト「さとふる」と「楽天ふるさと納税」はそれぞれ約400万ドルの寄付を集めた。 ふるなびは約90万ドルを集めた。
寄付者には、選択した自治体からの返礼品を辞退するという選択肢もあります。)
