Japan’s National Museum of Nature and Science says its crowdfunding campaign has raised more than 900 million yen, or about 6 million dollars, far exceeding its original target of 100 million yen.
日本の国立科学博物館は、クラウドファンディングキャンペーンで当初の目標額1億円を大幅に上回る9億円以上、つまり約600万ドル以上の資金が集まったと発表した。

The head of the museum, Shinoda Kenichi, and other officials told a news conference on Monday that more than 56,000 people had contributed to the campaign that ended the previous day.
同博物館の篠田健一館長ら関係者は月曜日の記者会見で、前日終了したキャンペーンに5万6000人以上が寄付したと述べた。

The museum launched the drive on August 7, saying it was struggling to collect and preserve specimens due to the severe financial strain caused by soaring utility costs and other factors.
同博物館は、光熱費の高騰などで財政が厳しくなり、標本の収集・保存が困難になっているとして、８月７日にこの取り組みを始めた。

The museum’s collection of more than 5 million items, including animal, plant and fossil specimens, is one of the largest in Japan.
動植物、化石標本など500万点を超える収蔵品は日本最大級。

Museum officials told reporters that they will spend about 2 million dollars on return gifts and fees.
博物館関係者らは記者団に対し、返礼品と手数料に約２００万ドルを費やす予定だと語った。

They said they plan to use the rest of the money to build an additional storage facility in Tsukuba City to manage the growing number of specimens and to further improve the collection.
彼らは残りの資金を使ってつくば市に追加の保管施設を建設し、増え続ける標本を管理し、収集をさらに改善する予定であると述べた。

Shinoda said the crowdfunding has been a great success, and a far larger number of people provided support than had been expected.

He also said officials believe the increased awareness of the museum’s financial difficulties was the main factor behind the success of the campaign.

Shinoda expressed hope that the museum will continue to receive donations.
