Napoleon’s hat fetches over $2.1 million in Paris auction

A hat believed to have belonged to French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte has sold at an auction for about 1.9 million euros, or more than 2.1 million dollars.
フランス皇帝ナポレオン・ボナパルトのものとされる帽子がオークションで約190万ユーロ、つまり210万ドル以上で落札された。

The bidding took place at an auction house in the Paris suburbs on Sunday.
入札は日曜日にパリ郊外のオークションハウスで行われた。

Reuters and other media outlets reported that the hat was made of black beaver felt in the traditional bicorne shape, a trademark of Napoleon. He is featured wearing same-shaped hats in existing paintings.
ロイター通信や他のメディアは、この帽子はナポレオンのトレードマークである伝統的な二角形の黒いビーバーフェルトで作られていたと報じた。既存の絵画でも同じ形の帽子をかぶっている姿が描かれている。

The auctioned bicorne hat has a cockade that Napoleon himself is said to have affixed in 1815, when he returned to power after crossing the Mediterranean from his exile on Elba Island.
オークションに出品された双角帽には、ナポレオンがエルバ島での亡命から地中海を渡って権力の座に戻った1815年に、ナポレオン自身が付けたとされる紋章が付いている。

Napoleon is said to have owned about 120 bicorne hats. Twenty are believed to remain today, and many of them are reportedly in private collections.
ナポレオンは約120個の双角帽を所有していたと言われています。現在でも 20 個が残っていると考えられており、その多くは個人のコレクションにあると伝えられています。

The auction house said the price of this bicorne hat set a record, beating another hat of Napoleon’s that fetched about 1.88 million euros in 2014.
競売会社によると、この双角帽の価格は、2014年に約188万ユーロで落札された別のナポレオンの帽子を破り、記録を樹立したという。
