Right. In the States the fiscal year is generally from October to September.
Naomi:
10月から9月ということは、Fiscal year 2024, 2023の10月から2024の9月？
Tom:
No. Fiscal year, 2024 is normally from October 2023 to September 2024. Pretty confusing, right?
Naomi:
Mmm. It’s really confusing.
Tom:
So when you’re dealing with business- or economics-related news and you come across fiscal year, pay attention to what country the story is talking about.
Takeshita:
国によって違うと思います。もう一つ in-house servers 社内のサーバー
in-house 「社内の、組織内の」形容詞
in-house expert 「社内の専門家」、
in-house brand 「自社ないのブランド、自社ブランド」
Tom:
And you can use in-house as an adverb. Here’s an example, we do all of our manufacturing in-house.
Naomi:
私達は全ての製造を自社で行っている。副詞として使うことも出来るんですね
Tom:
Right.
Naomi:
トムさんの気になる英語表現を教えてください。
Tom:
Sure, my phrase is today’s keyword, cloud computing. Naomi, could you say that once in Japanese?
Naomi:
クラウドコンピューティング
Tom:
Okay, can you think of any other words that you hear a lot these days and start the same way?
Naomi:
最近、よく聞くので、同じクラウドで始まるクラウドファンディングとか、クラウドソーシングとかでしょうか？
Tom:
Yes. Now you’d think that they all use the same cloud, but you’d be wrong. Cloud computing uses cloud. The thing you see in the sky.
Naomi:
Yes.
Tom:
Crowd funding uses crowd. A big group of people.
Naomi:
あー。クラウドファンディングとか、クラウドソーシングのクラウドは、clould 雲じゃなく、crowd 群衆なんですね。カタカナにすると同じに。どっちかわからなくなります。
Tom:
Cloud computing is about data on the internet, which like a cloud is kind of a shapeless thing that feels like it’s in the air.
Takeshita:
シェイプレス、shapeless、クラウドコンピューティングは、形がなくて、インターネットのネットワーク上にサービスがあるので、最近はやっています。
Tom:

(クラウドファンディングやクラウドソーシングは、大勢の人々から支援を受けるもので、インターネットのクラウド上のサーバーにあるデータから支援を受けるのではなく、実際の人間の群衆から支援を受けるのだ。)
Naomi:
違いが分かると、理解しやすいですね。

Takeshita:
country’s borders 日本の国内でデータのやり取りを完結させる。日本の規制、ルールーのもとでデータの取り扱いの安全性を確保する。

データも情報も大事なリソースです。

Tom:

(さて、今日の話を考えるとき、「雲」は実にいい比喩だ。空中の雲は国境を気にしない。そして長い間、クラウド・コンピューティングも同じで、良くも悪くも国境がなかった。そして今、状況は変わりつつある。データ主権へのシフトが企業や個人にとってどうなるのか、興味深いところだ。)
今までは良くも悪くもボーダーレス、今後は、データ主権を意識する。
