Sweden clears final barrier to NATO

Leaders in Sweden have cleared the final hurdle allowing their country to join NATO. On Monday, they saw lawmakers in Hungary approve their bid to join the alliance.
スウェーデンの指導者たちは、自国のNATO加盟を許可する最後のハードルをクリアした。月曜日にはハンガリーの国会議員が同盟への参加を承認した。
Prime Minister Viktor Orban had promised Hungary would not be the last of NATO’s 31 members to ratify. But, last month, members of parliament in Turkey approved Sweden’s request. Finally, he relented. “We make alliances to defend each other in case of outside attack. There is no more serious commitment than this,” Orban said.

Leaders in Sweden and Finland both applied to join NATO in May 2022. But the Swedes saw their bid drag on for more than 18 months. Then, last week, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson met with Orban in Budapest and agreed to sell Hungary four fighter jets. “Sweden is leaving 200 years of neutrality and non-alignment behind,” Kristersson said. “It is a big step. We must take that seriously.”

Russian officials had warned leaders in both Nordic nations of “countermeasures” if they joined the bloc. Kristersson said the only thing he can be sure of is that the Russians “will not be happy.”
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Sweden’s membership will make the alliance “stronger and safer.”
