Guinness World Records recognizes ‘Totto-chan’

The memoir “Totto-chan: The Little Girl at the Window,” written by Japanese actor and TV personality Kuroyanagi Tetsuko, has been certified by Guinness World Records as having the most copies published for an autobiography by a single author.
The book was first published in 1981 and more than 25 million copies have been printed worldwide.
“Totto-chan” depicts Kuroyanagi as a first grader meeting new friends and Mr Kobayashi, the school principal, when she transfers to a school in Tokyo. The descriptions of vibrant children and a friendly teacher-student atmosphere struck a chord.
Publisher Kodansha says the book has been translated into more than 20 languages, and 25,113,862 copies have been published in Japan and abroad as of the end of September. A sequel was released in October.
Kuroyanagi says she did not intend to write an autobiography but just wanted to write about Mr. Kobayashi and her childhood memories.
She says she hopes more small children and young people will read the story and feel it is all right to think freely like Mr. Kobayashi.

俳優でタレントの黒柳徹子が書いた回想録『窓ぎわのトットちゃん』が、単一作家の自伝として最も多く出版されたものとしてギネス世界記録に認定された。
この本は 1981 年に初めて出版され、世界中で 2,500 万部以上が印刷されました。
「トットちゃん」は、東京の学校に転校してきた黒柳が一年生として、新しい友達や校長の小林先生と出会う姿を描く。生き生きとした子供たちの描写と、教師と生徒のフレンドリーな雰囲気が心に響きました。
出版社の講談社によると、この本は２０カ国語以上に翻訳され、９月末現在、国内外で２５１１万３８６２部発行されている。 10月には続編も公開されました。
黒柳さんは自伝を書くつもりはなく、ただ小林さんと幼少期の思い出について書きたかっただけだと語る。
もっと多くの小さな子供たちや若者がこの物語を読んで、小林さんのように自由に考えてもいいのだと感じてほしいと彼女は言う。)
