♪Topic 19: What advice has helped you? Day 4.
Before we move on to this week’s topic, let’s have a chat with Mandy. Mandy, could you tell us about school life in Spain? When did your school year start?
The school year starts in September.
What time did school start?
Around 8:30.
Mmm. 8:30.
Really early.
And Mandy, how did you get to school?
Oh. My mom used to take me to school, but some friends went to school by bus.
Did you have a uniform?
Oh. I had a uniform, but only between 10 and 14.
That’s the ages between 10 and 14.
Yes.
You wore a uniform. I see.
What was your uniform like?
Oh, ugly. I didn’t like my uniform.
Oh, no.
We had a dark green, long skirt, and really long socks and a gray sweater.
Oh.
Yeah.
How about lunches? What kind of lunches did you have?
We had a break for lunch. It was around two hours long. So, we have(had) time for going home, eat(ing) with our parents, and coming back.
That’s really nice.
It was.
Did everyone do that?
Not really. Some of my classmates used to go to the cafeteria. And some days, I wanted to stay in cafeteria, too. Because, you know, it was pizza day or lasagna day. And I wanted to stay there and have fun with my friends.
Very nice.
Two hours to enjoy eating pizza with your friends.
Yes.
So, when you got back to school after the break, what time was it?
I think it was 3:00 p.m. And we have(→had) two more hours of school. So, we had classes until 5:00 p.m.
Wow. Kind of a long day.
Yes.
What kind of events did you have in school?
Oh. We have the best party in the world called La Fiesta del Agua, the water festival.
Oh. Okay.
In Alicante, we have a tradition of building a giant statue and then burn(ing) it up. And then the fire workers come, and they throw some water to everyone, and we start a giant party. But we couldn’t go to this kind of events(→event) as kids because it was too dangerous. So, instead of going to the Hogueras, or fire festival, we create(d) the water festival. We get out of the class, we take all water pistols, we take water balloons, and we create tiny little figures that we burn up, and then we start going crazy. We had a huge party all day.
That’s fun.
Was this everyone, all the students in the school, at the same time?
All of the students at the same time.
Oh, wow.
It was crazy.
That is wild.
I didn’t want to be a teacher back then, for sure.
No. That would be a lot of work.
Yes.
