Robot vacuums join year-end cleanup at Tokyo shrine

東京千代田区の神田明神で１２月１２日、この１年のほこりを落とす「煤（すす）納め」の儀式にあわせて、初めてロボット掃除機も参加した大掃除が行われました。
(On December 12th, at Kanda Myojin Shrine in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, in conjunction with the “soot pay” ceremony to remove the dust of the past year, robot vacuum cleaners also participated in a major cleaning event for the first time.)

vacuum「真空」、ここでは vacuum cleaner「（吸引式の）掃除機」robot vacuum「ロボット掃除機」

子どもたちが私の家事を手伝ってくれた。
「年末の大掃除」、year-end cleanupやyear-end cleaning
cleanup（または clean-up）「すっかりきれいにする、一掃」
major cleanup「大掃除」、nationwide cleanup of corruption「国を挙げての汚職一掃」
ちなみに、日本では大掃除は年末のイメージがありますが、欧米など春先に行われることが一般的な地域ではspring cleaning「春の大掃除」
join 「参加する、加わる」
これ対して join inは、活動やアクティビティに「参加する、加わる」
例えば、An international team of volunteer medical workers joined in the relief efforts.
ボランティア医療従事者の国際チームがその救援活動に加わった。
shrine 、神道に限らず「聖堂」や「社（やしろ）」
priest「聖職者」、神道の聖職者（特に神主）は一般に Shinto priest、「宮司」chief priest
main building「本館」、ここでは神社の「社殿」のことです。
神職やみこがロボット掃除機とともに社殿に集まって儀式が行われたあと、ロボット掃除機１０台が一斉に動き出し、神職が道具を使って天井からつり下げられている照明部分などから床に落としたほこりを次々に吸い取っていきました。(After the Shinto priest Yamiko and his robot vacuum cleaners gathered in the shrine building to perform a ritual, the 10 robot vacuum cleaners started moving all at once, and the Shinto priest used tools to drop them from the lighting parts hanging from the ceiling onto the floor. It sucked up dust one after another.)
go to work「仕事に行く」という意味ではなく、「仕事に取りかかる、着手する」= get to work
動詞 hoover「～に掃除機をかける」
hoover the carpet「じゅうたんに掃除機をかける」(掃除機を作っているアメリカのメーカーの名前から一般語彙になった言葉)
句動詞hoover up「（掃除機が）吸い上げる」
ちなみに、hoover up「～をすばやく食べる・飲む、～を大量に消費する、多くの～を集める」
例えば、He hoovered up all the snacks on the plate.
彼は皿に盛られたお菓子を全部平らげた。
アメリカでは最初のセンテンスに出てきた　vacuum「掃除機」をそのまま動詞として使うことが多く、
Have you vacuumed the kitchen?
「台所に掃除機かけた？」
dust「ほこり」、dust swept down to the floor「床に掃き落されたほこり」
dust that (イギリス英語の場合はwhich) was swept down to the floor と言葉を補うと分かりやすくなります。
動詞sweep 「（ほうきなどで）掃く、（ちりやほこりを）払う」
動詞 clean「掃除する、きれいにする」
clean the table「テーブルをきれいに拭く」
ちなみに、clean one’s plate「（皿の上にあった）料理を（きれいに）平らげる」慣用句
a separate hall used for sacred performances「神聖な上演に使われる別のホール」、神田明神の「神楽殿」
