♪ Topic 20: Do you volunteer? Day 4.
Before we move on to this week’s topic, let’s have a chat with Mandy. Mandy, could you tell us more about your life in Spain?
Yes, of course.
In junior high and high school, what did you do in your free time?
I remember, after school, I always went to the park with my friends. And we used to make homemade videos. We’re(→We were) trying to recreate famous scenes from the movies that we love(d), and we have(→had) a blast together. It was so fun to be there, just hanging out with friends that has(→had) the same interest(s). And there, I met my best friend. So, it was an amazing time.
have a blast (話)とても楽しい経験[時間]を過ごす
What is your best memory in high school?
My best memory in high school… hmm, I would say I met my best friends. And I met a lot of people that enjoys(enjoy) Japanese culture, also. So, I made friends that even now, we’re still messaging each other and having phone calls. It’s a very special feeling. It’s not friends anymore, it’s family.
Nice.
What was special about your school?
Well, my school was pretty normal, but my hometown university have(→had) this special party. It was (a) paella contest.
Paella contest?
Yes. Every student from each department, they get(→got) together, they made teams, and they made one huge paella. And then the parents and the teachers arrive(d) and start(ed) eating every single paella, and they have(had) to decide which one was the best. It was so much fun. Everyone was invited. Of course, this is Spain, so we love to party.
That is special. You said that paella was one of the best foods in Spain.
Yes.
What other really good foods are in Spain?
We have tapas.
Tapas?
Tapas.
What’s tapas?
Tapas is tiny pieces of food. Sometimes omelet, sometimes meat with sauce in a tiny little plate. And usually, they serve with bread. So, this looks like a very normal food.
But the special thing is the fact that you always share this with your family and friends. So, this means, “I want to spend a tiny piece of my life with you.”
That’s nice. So, it’s a special meal to have.
Yes. It’s very special. When someone ask(s) you, “Do you want to come and hang out at the bar and have some tapas?” that usually means, “I don’t have a lot of time, but I want to spend it with you.”
That’s great.
I like that.
