Vatican may allow priests to bless same-sex couples

The Vatican says it will be possible for Roman Catholic priests to bless same-sex couples under certain conditions.
This is widely seen as a landmark ruling as the Vatican holds that marriage is a union only between a man and a woman for the purpose of having children. It previously said that same-sex couples cannot be blessed.
On Monday, the Vatican released a document approved by Pope Francis, opening the possibility of “blessing same-sex couples in irregular situations.”
The document says, “one should not prevent or prohibit the Church’s closeness to people in every situation in which they might seek God’s help through a simple blessing.”
It adds, “it should in no way be confused with the sacrament of heterosexual marriage.”
The Vatican says the doctrine regarding marriage will not change and it maintains its opposition to gay marriage.
But recently, some Catholic churches in Germany and elsewhere have accepted LGBT people as believers.
Pope Francis has also shown willingness to bless same-sex couples.
Media outlets in the West have reported the Vatican’s new ruling as breaking news, calling it a significant change in its position.
