A prominent Hong Kong activist says she will probably never return to the city. Agnes Chow revealed she now lives in Canada and won’t go back for her own safety.
Chow updated her Instagram account for the first time in about two years on Sunday. She wrote that she’s currently in Toronto and had left Hong Kong in September.
Chow was jailed in 2020 for her role in pro-democracy protests. She was released in 2021. She was scheduled to return to Hong Kong this month, as she is required to periodically report to the police. But she said she won’t go back, citing the situation in Hong Kong, her personal safety, and her physical and mental health.
Chow is widely known as one of the leaders of the Umbrella Movement, where young people in Hong Kong called for democratic elections.
Hong Kong police condemned her move in a statement Monday, saying it is “irresponsible” and challenges law and order.

A Japanese firm that researches the restaurant industry has selected “onigiri,” or rice balls, as the “dish of the year.” The company notes that the normally simple items have been evolving into elaborate and colorful creations, featuring shrimp and other high-end toppings.
Onigiri are plain rice wrapped with dried sheets of seaweed and contain fish or other items. The company says the number of restaurants in Japan specializing in the new gourmet-style items is growing rapidly in large cities. It notes that sales are on the rise and the items are even appearing in countries outside Japan.
The company announced the annual award on Monday. It is given to foods that symbolize social trends of the past year. The selection is based on search numbers for gourmet websites and consumer surveys.

New Zealand’s new prime minister has shared his agenda for his first 100 days in office. It includes rolling back a law by the previous administration that would eventually ban smoking completely.

“Today I’m outlining our work plan for this coalition government’s first 100 days in office. It is ambitious, but it is necessary in order to bring about the relief to New Zealanders, who have been doing it tough for way too long.”
Luxon’s “100 Day Action Plan” says the government will repeal a ban on selling tobacco products to anyone born in 2009 or later. It was the first such law in the world. Local media report critics are saying the move would increase tax revenue at the cost of public health.
Another aim is to ban the use of mobile phones in schools and require primary and intermediate schools to teach reading, writing, and mathematics for one hour per day.

North Korea says the country is officially starting on Friday the operation of what it claims to be a military reconnaissance satellite it launched last week.
Pyongyang says it successfully launched and put into orbit its first military spy satellite on November 21 after two failed attempts earlier this year.
The North’s state-run media report leader Kim Jong Un visited the control center of the country’s aerospace administration after the launch. The media added he viewed photos taken by the satellite.
The imagery reportedly included photos of the White House and the Pentagon, as well as U.S. bases in Japan, South Korea, and Guam. But no photos have been released so far.
The North’s ruling Workers’ Party is expected to hold a plenary meeting of its Central Committee in December to decide on a plan to launch more reconnaissance satellites next year.

A street in central Tokyo was overrun by dozens of Akita dogs for the 100th anniversary of the birth of Japan’s most famous canine, Hachiko. The loyal Akita used to wait for his master to return from work each day at Shibuya Station, a practice that continued even after his owner’s death.
About 40 Akita dogs and their owners from around the country gathered in Shibuya for the event. It was organized by the Akita Inu Preservation Society, based in Odate City, Akita Prefecture, the birthplace of Hachiko.
The dogs and their owners set out for a walk along a one-kilometer route between the local ward office and Shibuya Station. The canine parade attracted a crowd of people eager to get a glimpse of the dogs and record the memory.
