♪ Topic 21: What school rule would you like to change? Day 4.
All right, then. Let’s welcome our guest for the next two months. Joining us in the studio is…
Hi, I’m Maria. Please call me Minnie.
Hi!
Minnie! Nice to meet you.
Minnie. Why “Minnie”?
In Germany, we have Vienna sausages. And we have a small version called mini Viennas. I used to eat a lot of them. So, that’s why my parents called me “Minnie.”
Oh, so cute.
Yes. That’s cute.
Thank you.
Minnie, please tell us about yourself.
I’m from Germany, and I’m living in Japan at the moment. I’m very into Japanese culture. I like Japanese history, especially (the) Sengoku period.
Oh, wow.
Yeah. And I studied archaeology at University (of) Hamburg.
Archaeology is studying very old buildings and things so that we can understand how people in the past lived and thought.
Exactly. I focused on Japanese archaeology. That’s why I like the Yayoi period and the Kofun period as well.
Wow. So interesting.
You’re the first person I’ve met who has these interests.
Yes. I don’t meet many people who have the same interest, either.
That’s really special.
Thank you very much.
Minnie, I have a question.
Yes.
When did you come to Japan?
The first time I came to Japan was when I was a high school student. I was 16 years old.
Sixteen years.
And I came during my summer vacation for about three weeks to learn Japanese language.
Could you learn much Japanese in three weeks?
Not really. I learned very easy phrases, like “Excuse me,” “Where’s the toilet?” or “I’m hungry.”
Important phrases.
The most important phrases to survive.
Yes. I see.
Where in Germany do you recommend visiting?
I’m from the northern part of Germany. So, of course, I would recommend visiting the northern part. I was born in Hamburg. And when you go a little bit more towards the northern part, you have Lübeck, which is a very famous city for music. And there is a university to study music as well. And it has a very special architecture that is special for Northern Germany.
So, you said “architecture.” So, that’s how the buildings are made and how they look?
Yes. Exactly. Many buildings are made of red brick stones. It looks a little bit like in Yokohama, the Akarenga, and this is very typical for Northern German architecture.
Interesting.
What do you recommend eating?
I think German food is very delicious. In my hometown, we are very close to the ocean. So, we eat a lot of fish, and we have a hamburger made of fish that is called Frikadelle. And you can combine it with salad or fried potatoes, and it’s very delicious. So, I would recommend eating Frikadelle.
Nice.
Riku, would you like to try Frikadelle?
Yes. I want to eat (it).

-Guest’s Thoughts
