♪ Topic 22: What is your best memory of this school year? Day 4.
Before we move on to this week’s topic, let’s chat with Minnie.
Sure.
Minnie, could you tell us what your junior high school was like in Germany?
Actually, in Germany, junior high school and high school is (are) together. So, my memories are very mixed. But I remember learning and studying a lot, but also having many fun moments with my friends.
What kind of subject(s) did you like?
My favorite subjects were German and art. In German class, we read German literature, like Goethe and Schiller. And we analyzed their poems and their stories and talked about the meaning in class. And in arts(→art), of course, we did some drawings, too. But we also looked at the pictures and tried to find out what the painter or the artist might have felt when they were drawing the picture.
Did your school serve, uh, lunch in a cafeteria, or did you go home for food?
I lived very close to my school, only five minutes on foot.
Oh, well.
So, I went home for lunch.
Nice.
But some of my friends were living far away, and they had to take the bus. So, they ate in the lunchroom.
You lived only five minutes on foot
Yes.
from school. So, would you sleep until just before school begins(→ began) and run to school?
Yes. And I was always the late one.
That’s funny.
What kind of school events did you have?
Oh. My school was a very special school because we had many art and music classes as well.
Lovely.
We had many events like concerts or theater plays, too, or we were drawing pictures and showing them in the school halls. So, we have(had) many different kinds of artistic events.
I see.
Which ones did you participate in?
I loved singing, so I was singing in the musical choir and also in the classic music choir.
Nice.
And I used to play the violin, so I was playing in the orchestra as well.
That’s amazing.
And what is your best memory of junior high?
I think my best memory was when my homeroom teacher gave me a Japanese card game. I really loved
Japanese culture, and many of the students couldn’t understand. But my teacher understood me very well, and she supported me from the very beginning. So, when she gave me the Japanese card game as a present, I was very, very happy. And I still remember that moment today.
Nice.
