Volunteering means helping your community without getting paid.
One way to volunteer is to do neighborhood cleanups, like Saki says she does in this month’s Topic 20 Dialogue.
ボランティアとは、報酬を得ずにコミュニティを助けることを意味します。

When you do a neighborhood cleanup, you walk through the streets, parks, and playgrounds of a community, picking up trash. You can do this alone, or with a friend, or with a group of volunteers. Just a few minutes of picking up trash helps make the world a bit better. You’ll also feel good about yourself.

There are many other ways to volunteer, too. You can help care for children by doing fun activities with them or perhaps tutoring them. You can volunteer to help elderly people with daily activities like going for a walk, shopping, or preparing meals, or maybe just spend time talking with them. You can help care for animals.

Like Ken, you might think, “I’m just one person. I don’t think I can change the world.” It’s true that one person can’t do everything. But if everyone does a little, it can make a big difference. If we all work together, our small efforts can add up to something great.
