7,000 以上の島々から成り、 1億1,000万もの人口を抱える。 宗主国だったスペインやアメリカの影響でキリスト教を信仰する人が多く、 英語が公用語の1つに定められている。 首都マニラに隣接するマカティは「フィリピンのウォール街」とうたわれるほど経済の中心として成長を続けており、 再開発が進み観光客の関心も高まってきている。
