南アジアに位置する世界一の人口を抱える国。 首都はニューデリー。
公用語のヒンディー語に次いで英語が準公用語として定められているほか、 20余りの言語が憲法で公認されている。 ヒンドゥー教徒が人口の約8割を占め、 宗教的背景を持つインド独自の生活習慣が存在する。
近年は映画産業が注目を集めており、 大都市ムンバイのかつての名称「ボンベイ」をもじって「ボリウッド」 映画として親しまれている。
