シンガポールの英語事情とは?
シンガポールでは中国系、マレー系、インド系などさまざまな人々が生活していますが、その全員にとって中立的な言語、それが英語です。(There are many different people living in Singapore, including Chinese, Malay, and Indian, and English is a neutral language for all of them.)
いずれかに偏るのではなく、お互いの歩み寄りとして英語はちょうどいい言語。
(English is the perfect language to use as a compromise between the two, rather than relying on one side or the other. )
行政や教育ではそれが特に当てはまると思います。ちなみに、シンガポールと同様に多民族国家のインドでもそれは同じです。
I think this is especially true in government and education. By the way, the same is true in India, which is a multi-ethnic country like Singapore.)

シンガポールでは小学校の授業が英語で行われるそうです。 (In Singapore, elementary school classes are taught in English. )
つまり、「英語を学ぶ」ではなく「英語で学ぶ」環境があるということ。 (In other words, there is an environment where you can “learn in English” rather than “learning English.”)
さらに、休み時間には児童や生徒同士が英語で会話をしています。
(Furthermore, during recess, children and students converse in English with each other.)
日本のインターナショナルスクールだと、授業中は英語でも休み時間には日本語で話すというケースをよく見ますが、それとは異なる、より徹底した環境と言えそうです。
( At international schools in Japan, students often speak English during class but Japanese during recess, but this seems to be a different, more thorough environment.)
ある調査では、シンガポールの英語力はアジアでトップと言われています。これからの日本も、そんなシンガポール
に学ぶことがあるかもしれませんね。
According to a survey, Singapore’s English proficiency is said to be the highest in Asia. The future of Japan will also be like Singapore. There may be something we can learn from this.)
