Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has spoken of his intention to “reset” the “direction of Ukraine’s leadership” in the war effort against Russia. He announced on Thursday that he will replace his commander-in-chief.

Zelenskyy posted a video on social media expressing his gratitude to General Valerii Zaluzhnyi for two years of service.

He said his country has proven it can “regain control over the Ukrainian sky” but, unfortunately, has not been able to achieve its goals “on the ground.” He said troops need a “different approach” toward mobilization and recruitment in order to overcome a feeling of “stagnation.”

Zaluzhnyi confirmed that he had had an “important and serious conversation” with the president. He said the “tasks” of the past are different from those of the present and agreed on the need for a new strategy in the war.

Local media had been reporting that Zelenskyy turned down Zaluzhnyi’s request to mobilize up to 500,000 fresh troops.

The new military chief is Colonel-General Oleksandr Syrskyi, who had commanded the ground forces since 2019.

The change of command comes as Ukrainian forces are running out of soldiers and ammunition on the frontline. They are struggling to push back Russian troops in the face of intensifying ground battles in the east.

同氏は、自国は「ウクライナの空の制圧を取り戻す」ことができることを証明したが、残念ながら「地上では」その目標を達成できていないと述べた。同氏は、軍隊は「閉塞感」を克服するために、動員と徴兵に対して「異なるアプローチ」が必要だと述べた。

ザルジニ氏は大統領と「重要かつ真剣な会話」をしたことを認めた。同氏は、過去の「任務」は現在のものとは異なると述べ、戦争における新たな戦略の必要性について同意した。

地元メディアは、ゼレンシキー大統領が最大50万人の新兵動員を求めるザルージニ大統領の要請を拒否したと報じていた。

新しい軍司令官には、2019年から地上軍を指揮していたオレクサンドル・シルシキー大佐が就任する。

指揮官の交代は、ウクライナ軍の前線で兵士と弾薬が不足している中で行われた。東部での地上戦の激化に直面して、ロシア軍を押し返すのに苦戦している。
