♪Topic 2: Tell us what you’re into. Day 4.
All right. Before we talk about this week’s topic, let’s have a chat with Ben. Ben, before, you told us that your father is from the Caribbean islands.
Yes. So, my father is from a country called Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. It’s a country in the Caribbean made up of lots of small islands. So, the Caribbean is located below America and above Brazil. Yes, that’s very far away from Japan. It takes more than 24 hours. That’s a whole day of traveling.
Wow. That’s a long trip. What language do they speak there?
So, the official language of Saint Vincent and the A Grenadines is English. But there are people who still speak Vincentian Creole, which is a mixture of English and their native language.
How interesting.
Yes, mainly English.
How often do you go to Saint Vincent?
I’ve been to Saint Vincent four times in my life, but I went twice when I was a baby, so I don’t remember.
What can you see there?
It is so beautiful. It’s covered in forests, and all the houses are different colors. So, you get blue houses, red houses, even pink houses.
Oh, colorful.
Yes. Sounds beautiful.
Ben, what kind of activities can you do there?
There’s not much to do there other than sunbathing or swimming, but the water is so clear. It’s great for snorkeling or diving.
Oh. Are there many fish?
Yes. So, even when you’re standing up above the water, you can see the fish swimming around your feet. It’s really fun.
Really beautiful.
Tell us about the food.
So, my favorite thing(s) to eat when I go to Saint Vincent are the fresh fruits. Yes. So, fruits taste so sweet and so rich.
Nice.
We actually have a mango tree in our garden, so we get to pick and eat mangoes whenever we want.
Oh, wow. That’s like a dream.
Yes.
Sounds wonderful.
Yes. You should all come visit.
Yes!
I would like to.
Yes. Ben, what kind of animals can you see?
So, there’re lots of animals, like lizards that you see everywhere and a lot of dogs
Oh, really?
running around the island. Even at a lizard restaurant, there’ll be lizards, dogs, crawling everywhere.
Are the lizards big lizards or little lizards?
They’re all quite small,
Ah.
but they’re all very friendly.
Wow. That sounds cool.

-Guest’s Thoughts
This week, we’re talking about the things we’re into. So, Ben, please tell us what you’re into.
One of my favorite hobbies is hiking. It’s a great combination of exercise and holiday. The view you get at the top is a reward for the hard work of the hike.
Yeah. Have you done any hiking in Japan?
Yes. Actually, I tried to climb Mount Fuji when I was 15 years old, but I felt sick near the top, and I couldn’t make it.
Oh.
Oh, no!
Yeah. Now that I’m stronger, I have to try again.
Yes.
Certainly.
Try again.
Ben?
Yes?
What does “reward” mean?
A reward is like a present that you get for doing hard work.
